ISRA Mourns the passing away of World famous Muslim scholar and Sufi Luminary Mawlana Shaykh Nazim al-Haqqani

It is with a heavy heart and immense grief ISRA reports that the world famous Muslim scholar and an exemplary Sufi luminary of modern times Shaykh Nazim al-Haqqani has passed away in Nicosia on Wednesday morning May 7 at the age of 92 in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhee Raji'un Shaykh Nazim had been receiving intense care since April 17 when he rushed from his home in Lefke to the Near-East University Hospital in Lefkosa (Nicosia) after suffering from respiratory problems and heart failure.

Shaykh Nazim was the Shaykh of the Naqshibandi-Haqqani Sufi order which traces its roots back to 11th-century Sufi Saint Hazrath Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani and 13th-century mystical poet Hazrath Jalaluddin Rumi. He inherited the leadership of the order from Shaykh Abdullah Fa'izi ad-Daghestani after he passed away in 1973 and has millions of followers all over the world.

Having lived in Turkey, Syria and the United Kingdom, Shaykh Nazim then settled in his hometown in the TRNC. He was fluent in English, Turkish, Arabic and Cypriot Greek. Muhammad Nazim Adil al-Qubrusi al-Haqqani, known simply as Shaykh Nazim, was an important leader of the resurgence of Islamic Tasawwuf (Sufism) in the 20th century. He tirelessly worked for decades in organizing Sufi activities and initiating people into his Naqshbandi Sufi Tariqa, especially in the West. ISRA which emerged as one of the leading effort to revive Tasawwuf as an integral part of Islamic belief and practice since the mid ninetees in the United States was inspired by his work and message.

Shaykh Nazim became one of the most ardent critics of Wahhabism. Shaykh Nazim’s son-in-law and deputy, Shaykh Hisham, who represents him in the United States, valiantly defended traditional Sunni Islam both intellectually and organizationally breaking the momentum of one dimensional, political and literal interpretation of Islam.

ISRA organization which promoted the love of Allah and the love of His Messenger (saws) as the basis and motivation of worship in Islam cooperated with Haqqani Sufi order and other traditional organizations, groups and scholars to spread the love of Allah (swt) and the love of Prophet Muhammad (saws) by organizing and popularizing gatherings of Dhikr and Mawlid in America.

In a statement of condolence , ISRA president Sidi Zayn Al Abedin expressed his heartfelt grief and sorrow at the passing away of Mawlana Shaykh Nazim. He said in his statement that Mawlana's name will be written in golden letters in the history of the twentieth century exemplary leaders and spiritual guides who led the Islamic ummah to the revival of the spiritual essence of Islam. Mawlana was a giant pillar of the Sufi awakening of modern times. The ummah pays tribute to him as a symbol of purity and love who renewed the love and respect of awliyya Allah who were the true exemplars of the Prophetic sunnah.

He said that the whole ISRA family prays for the departed soul asking Allah (swt) to accept Shaykh Nazim in His abode of Mercy and in Hisclose proximity. Sidi Zayn said that ISRA organization shares the grief and loss of Shaykh Nazim and humbly asks Allah (swt) to grant Sabr ul Jameel (The most beautiful patience) to Shaykh Nazim's son Sidi Muhammad Adel and to his son in law and Nai'b (Deputy) Shaykh Kabbani and all members of his family.

Offering condolences to members of Haqqani Sufi order Sidi Zayn said that Mawlana Nazim's loss is an immense loss for the whole ummah and ISRA and its members share your loss and grief. ISRA has asked for offering special Fatiha and prayers after Jumuah prayers this coming Friday in all masjid of North America.
